Twin and Full-Size Beds for Kids

As your child gets older, you’re going to need a bed. Not a crib, or bassinet. Twin-size and full-size beds are what you want to consider. There’s nothing wrong with a queen- or king-sized bed, but you’re going to lose floor (play) space for a bed that is quite large for a child that size. Twin and full beds allow your child to spread out more without consuming the entire room, and are more than adequate for the next decade ahead.

Benefits of Twin and Full Beds

Ideally, twin beds offer more space than a toddler bed for your growing child. Which means a healthier development in the years ahead (you don’t want your child to have to curl in a ball to fit into the crib). But think beyond that–in a twin bed, you can join your child for some snuggles (finally). This is perfect for storytime at night.

If you have older kids that already have a twin bed, you’ll know that twin and full beds really do foster a sense of independence and show not only the parent, but the child, that adulthood is starting to loom on the horizon (which can be a terrorizing thought for parents and utterly exciting for kids).

Types of Twin and Full-Size Beds

There are several styles of twin and/or full beds that you’ll want to consider. There are platform beds, which are popular these days, and they offer a modern look without the need to buy a box spring. Then there are storage beds, which are what you think–beds with storage (usually drawers) that are built into the frame, which give you extra storage space for clothes, shoes, toys, or whatever else your heart desires. There are also trundle beds, which are like the storage beds, but instead of drawers, a second mattress pulls out. These are perfect for sleepovers. Really, the world is your oyster here.

How to Choose the Right Bed

When choosing a twin or full-size bed for your child, consider his or her current and future needs. Room Size is the biggest deciding factor; so measure the space in your child’s room to ensure the bed fits comfortably without overcrowding the room. Materials are also important; opt for beds made from durable materials like solid wood or metal. These will be longer-lasting and more valuable.
