The Best Baby Swings and Bouncers

Not entirely unlike the swings you remember from childhood, the baby swing comes with some exciting modifications that turn it into a powerful force of entertainment and sleep-inducing magic that every parent can love. Simply, the idea of a swing stays the same, but add in an incredible amount of soft padding for baby to sleep in, the ability to rock front-to-back or side-to-side, variable swinging speeds powered by a wall outlet or batteries (your choice), calming nature sounds and songs, as well as a mobile or other eye-catching functionality that makes the swing a place a of wonder and excitement as much as a cozy place to take a nap. The rocking motion might just be the cure for your colicky baby.

Baby bouncers work naturally, not via a motor (running on electrical or battery power). Just like swings, they create a rocking motion that helps to soothe and comfort most babies. The advantage to a baby bouncer (sometimes called a toddler rocker) is its portability--they are super easy to travel with. Baby swings are typically too cumbersome to take places.

Babies love bouncers and swings, so you can’t make a wrong decision. Babies can relax equally in both. Parents love the added help a swing or bouncer provides, and both are great choices for giving your little one the chance to both relax and explore.

Baby swings are typically designed for the first year of birth, and by age two they tend to get phased out (or passed on to the new baby). During that time, the investment in baby gear like a swing or bouncer pays tremendous dividends--especially when you happen to have a child who only settles down when they’re in motion.

Baby Swing and Bouncer Safety

Be sure to read all the specific manufacturer's instructions that come with your baby gear, as there may be particular safety directions outside of the general best practices for baby safety when it comes to swings and bouncers.

First, you’ll want to mail in your registration card right away. In the unlikely event of a baby swing or bouncer recall, you’ll want to be informed immediately.

For swings/ bouncers, you’ll want to follow these guidelines in addition to your device instructions:

  • Always use the baby harness while your child is in the swing.
  • Make sure the swing/bouncer is on a secure foundation and not in danger of tipping over.
  • Never leave your baby unattended while swinging.
  • Do supervise pets and siblings (or adults too unfamiliar with these devices to trust) around your child while they are in the swing. The swings work with a motor and should not be “pushed” to rock.
  • Be mindful that you don’t fall asleep while your baby is swinging. You can easily want to sneak in five minutes of shut eye, but if you fall asleep for a longer period, you may wake to find your child has been swinging for quite some time with only crying available as a protest (prolonged swinging can leave babies somewhat dizzy).
  • Don’t move the swing or bouncer to new locations while the baby is in it.
  • Start with the lower speed settings first, until you get to a point where you and your baby are happy (you’ll know).

Choosing Your Baby Swing or Bouncer

It can be daunting to choose which baby gear is right for your family’s needs, but we do want to help as much as we can. To that end, you can be assured that all the baby products are hand-selected by our team to meet and exceed safety standards. We’ve been doing this since 1933, and we’re all parents ourselves (it’s a family-owned business). More importantly, you could not find more passionate-about-baby-gear people to select these products--we love what we do.

Your decision on a bouncer or swing should really be driven first by available space in your home and then by personal style. There’s a variety of swings and bouncers that are equally comfortable and functional but done in entirely different styles. Features that you may want to explore include multiple swing speeds, trays, toys, mobiles, and padding. For bouncers, which are more streamlined in terms of design, you’ll want to choose based on any specific features that you require and your favorite (or your baby’s favorite) style.

Our Favorite Baby Swings and Bouncers

When it comes to swings and bouncers, we love our entire selection. Regardless, there are some models that should capture your attention for specific reasons:

  • The Nuna Leaf Grow Lounger Swing is a reclinable bouncer that’s made of premium fabrics and has that “just feels right” quality. The seat pad (with the 3-point harness) is removable, and the Leaf Grow transitions to a toddler seat as your child grows.
  • The 4moms Mamaroo 4 Baby Swing bounces up and down and sways from side to side, just like parents do when comforting their baby. Select from five unique motions, like car ride and tree swing, and five different speeds.li>
