Lids are too loose and will
Leak even after tightened. Have had trouble getting them clean too. Love the stand. Great size for hands too. Good but don't use anything that will stain.

These tubes are a great size and work perfect for my use(which is small groups of kids/classroom like setting). The company has also been wonderful. I had some tubes crack at the top and company sent we new ones right away. I had replacement sets within 2 days of my request!!

What are these test tubes made of?
October 4, 2017
Before ordering these test tubes, most parents would want to know whether the clear tube is made of plastic or glass. This is a safety issue. Plastic will react with many substances that children might put into the tubes -- whereas glass is neutral and therefore much safer (which is why real laboratories use glass). This key bit of info is absent from website description of this item.

Science Teacher/Grandma Says, "Yay"!
August 28, 2017
Loving the intro to science at an early age! I'm waiting until I babysit while mommy teaches before I really get into playing science with my 4 year old granddaughter. I showed her the science set, and I gave her a little H2O when she visited me, today. Immediately, she started trying out so many things on her own, like floating a small toy that she'd brought with her. This set just lends itself, naturally, to exploration. And the safety factor and outstanding! I also like that there are 3 test tubes. That opens of the possibility of doing "controlled" experiments. I can add one suggestion. I wish there had been a GRADUATED CYLINDER, which is the proper piece of glassware for measuring liquids. The beaker has a couple of graduations on it, but the beaker should be used more as a reaction vessel or to measure an approximate amount of liquid rather than a measuring tool. Closer graduations could be used to increase the child's dexterity, if that were a goal. The introduction of the terms 5 mL, 10 mL, etc. could be introduced when these terms are not tainted by resistance to the metric system.

Don't forget the extra cards
December 27, 2016
I agree with all the comments on how durable, great for little hands, educational, fun science toy, etc. I will add that I thought it was the best choice around for an age appropriate science kit for my 6 year old daughter. She loves all the components and doing her own experiments. In fact, be sure to catch that you can download 20 more pages for 10 more experiment cards if you go to the bonus content on this website. It may also help if you are unsure of making this purchase. You can see if those experiments look appropriate for your son or daughter. I also appreciate that the experiments use household items that most will already have in the home and if not they are easy and cheap to purchase. Great set!

Happy to have a Science-based role-playing toy
January 11, 2016
I was interested in buying this kit for my 18 month old because I realized that all of her role-playing toys were household/domestic. I am a scientist myself and want her to be exposed to other role-playing. I bought this kit for a friend's 18 month old as a gift first to see how it was, and we were both quite pleased. The toddlers enjoy putting the tubes in and out of the racks and screwing the tops on, but I think they will be interested to watch many of the experiments suggested on the cards, even if they are a bit too young to do some things on their own.

Great Gift Suggestion!
January 8, 2016
I gave the experiment set and the microscope to my three year old grand daughter at the suggestion of my daughter. When I explained the experiments to my grand daughter, she became so excited about getting to try them once she got home. She asked questions and her eyes, which are large anyway, became very large with anticipation. She'll enjoy each one.

Good Bath Toy
August 6, 2015
Use these to dissolve bath color pellets, and mix all kinds of colors, teaching how primary colors can combine to create new colors, teaching about how volume changes and concentration changes affect opacity. Large size, can screw caps on so tightly that toddlers can't open.

Excellent for K-4
June 2, 2015
I gave this to my 5 year old nephew who has never been to preschool so this was his first 'formal' science lesson. I had done most of these experiments as I am a preschool teacher, but I always had to run around to find the supplies needed. This made it so EASY!

I set this up on a picnic table outside to do with my nephew on his birthday, but we were soon joined by his sisters, 2nd and 4th grade. We did the volcano and some color mixing. I taught them the correct names for the pieces and they couldn't get enough. I wish I had more time to do more with them. They were so excited and so was I.

Unfortunately I live 2 hours away so I have to hope their mother will do these experiments with them. It is such an awesome set and I don't think anyone will be disappointed with it!

February 21, 2015
I bought this for my 5 year old daughter and we love it! I love that it includes experiment cards. We've done just about all of them and love each one.

All the materials in this kit are easy for kids to handle which weeds out frustration.

I can't say enough about this kit! We have other LR products and they are all great!

Disappointed
December 25, 2013
We tried the mini volcano and the measurements were so vague that it did not work. A "spoonful" of baking soda- teaspoon? Tablespoon? And how much is "some" vinegar? My son was really disappointed and so was I!
The set looks great and sturdy and is good for little hands, I also like the large size of the instruction cards and that they can easily be wiped. I hope other experiments work better.

Fantastic Resource!
December 17, 2012
As a former educator I LOVE this product. I having been using this product with my two girls and they are so excited about science! The science tools are durable, kid friendly, bright and fun. The science experiments provided in the set are super easy and simple. In the past I have scrounged around for things I could use for all of our science experiments, but this set provide the best of the basics. I am so happy with this product and would highly recommend it anyone who is interested in getting kids excited about learning!

This was the perfect gift from Santa for my 7 yr old future scientist. She loves doing the experiments and I love the durability of the product. I'm very happy with this kit and so is she. It's the perfect starter kit to begin to learn about tools necessary to become a scientist.

Great set for 3 - 5 yr olds!
February 3, 2011
This is a very sturdy, and easy to use set. Great for 3 - 5 year olds. My daughter loves it! The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that are a few flaws.

1) The test tube lid is not leak proof. Which is usually not a problem but can be with vigorous shaking.

2) None of the 10 projects use the flask.

3) Some of the projects include steps that are impossible. For example, it will tell you to use the tweezers to remove something from the test tube, but the tweezers do not fit in the test tube.

These flaws, notwithstanding, I do love the set.

Not too sure....
December 23, 2010
My six year old son just received the Primary Science Set as a gift. So far we have only completed 2 of the cards and I am quite disappointed. We did the mini volcano and if you use the directions printed on the card the volcano doesn't flow over the beaker, it works if you use a test tube.... Then we tried the "Shiny Pennies" experiment. First, either it takes a lot longer than the time directed on the card(10 mins), to use lemon juice to dissolve the tarnish off of the pennies or something stronger than lemon juice. As directed in the card you are "to use the tweezers to remove the pennies from the test tubes". Which sounds fun and real scientist like, except that it is completely impossible to get near the pennies with the tweezers. My child completely lost interest. Maybe he will not be a scientist?? We will try the other cards on another day.. hope they work better. On a positive note; the tools, test tubes and set are all large for little hands, and non breakable, easily washable.

Too Simple
May 23, 2010
This science set is very simple and doesn't really include anything that can not easily be found around the house, aside from a few unecessary props (such as the goggles). None of the activities can be done without purchasing or finding extra materials, and once you have them, you don't really need the set anymore. Most of the activities on the activity cards are very simple (such as testing whether or not various small objects float in water), and at least one is misleading: the 'volcano' made by mixing baking soda, vinegar, and food colouring (none of which are included in the set) doesn't look anything like the picture on the activity card.
